‘Tis the Season for Getting Engaged

In just the past two days, I’ve met with two couples for wedding consultations and have had several more inquire via phone and email.  Love is definitely in the air!  This is the time of year when lots of couples are becoming engaged, and it’s never too soon to start the wedding planning.  Dates book fast, especially in the peak months!  So I thought now would be the perfect time to share some tips for couples out there currently researching wedding photographers.

Do NOT underestimate the value of professional wedding photography. Wedding photography is one of  the few investments you’ll ever make that will truly last a lifetime.  You, your children, & your children’s children will be looking at these precious photographs.  After your wedding, when the cake has been eaten & the flowers have wilted, your photos will still be there forever to remind you of what was one of the most important days of your life.  Without a doubt, beautiful wedding photography is worth every penny, & the joy you’ll experience each time you look at your images is priceless.

Make sure you & your photographer’s shooting & editing style is a match made in heaven. When researching photographers, consistency is key.  Check out their online portfolios & take note of whether or not their style & quality is consistent among all of their images.  If the “look” of their photos differs quite a bit from one to the other, then it makes it more difficult to predict how exactly your images might turn out.

Do not put the most important day of your life in the hands of “Uncle Bob” if you can afford otherwise. You’re probably wondering who the heck Uncle Bob is…  It’s what the photography industry calls the family member or close friend who just bought a “fancy” camera & offers to shoot your wedding on the cheap.  I understand that taking him or her up on this money-saving offer could be tempting, but doing so to save a dime usually ends up costing you big time — images that are improperly exposed, off-focus, badly composed, & lacking creativity…YIKES!  Good photography is not just the result of a nice camera.  Experience & a creative “eye” are what really counts & is why, if at all possible, you should hire a professional wedding photographer.  Then you can rest assured that your big day is being well documented by someone who has a true passion for what they’re doing & the know-how to produce incredible images that will be cherished for years to come.

Book an engagement session. You’ll want these photos to remember this special time in your life.  Plus, shooting an engagement session gives us a chance to get to know each other even better before the wedding, & it allows you some practice time in front of the camera.  Then when the big day comes around, you two will be striking poses like you’ve been modeling all your life. lol

Don’t cut yourself short on time. If you’re wondering if you should add an additional hour or two of coverage to your photography package, do it!  No matter how much planning has been put into your wedding day timeline, it’s almost guaranteed that things will end up taking longer than expected.  Have all of the day’s special moments captured & save yourself some stress by making sure that you have chosen an adequate length of shooting time.

When checking out different wedding photographers, ask yourself, “Does this person even like weddings?” This may seem like a silly question, but you would be amazed at how many photogs out there simply shoot weddings only to pay their bills.  There is a huge difference in the quality of images from a photographer who is only motivated by the paycheck verses the one who actually enjoys what they’re doing & takes pride in their work.

So what about me?  I love weddings…actually I’m a bit obsessed with them.  I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again…if I wasn’t a photographer, I would be a wedding planner!  Come to my home and at any time you’ll see a huge pile of the latest bridal magazines on my coffee table.  Plus, I browse wedding blogs on a daily basis, and I can discuss current wedding trends and DIY decorating ideas for hours.  So yes, it’s safe to say I reeeeally like weddings.  :)

And just a warning…  I like to make brides cry…happy tears!  When viewing your wedding photos, I want you to be instantly flooded with the emotion of that special day.  My mission is to create images that not only evoke wonderful memories but, more importantly, feelings…the warm & fuzzy ones.
